This article discusses the use of federal affidavits of support that are required in all family based immigration cases to overcome public charge grounds of inadmissibility. 1996 immigration law amendments were designed to make Affidavits of support enforceable by the sponsored immigrant even after dissolution of the marriage. The evolving case law through 2012 is discussed in detail.
