Immigrant victims of crime are often reluctant to call the police for help or to participate in the criminal justice process. In cases involving domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, human trafficking and stalking barriers are compounded, as victims often face immigration-related abuse and threats of deportation. Research has found a strong link between domestic violence offenders and officer safety. This presentation will discuss the hallmarks of good domestic violence training, and the role policies can play in promoting offender accountability and officer, victim, and community safety. Faculty will highlight best practices for criminal investigations and successful prosecutions, particularly in cases involving immigrant victims, including U and T visa certification and language access.
