Law Enforcement and Prosecution Best Practices: Immigrant Crime Victims, Language Access and the U Visa (March 24, 2015) [pdf]

This 2 hour presentation for law enforcement will be held at the Maryland State Police Academy in Sykesville, Maryland. The training will be part of a two day training covering domestic violence and human trafficking. The training is being planned by the Maryland Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland. Attendees with be sworn officers from across the state of Maryland. Topics to be covered include Maryland immigrant demographics, law enforcement’s role as U visa certifiers and T visa endorsers; the U and T visas as crime fighting tools and the benefits to law enforcement of these programs; the importance of language access, and the importance of understanding DHS enforcement priorities and victim protection obligations. The training included DHS roll call videos and a DHS training video on crime scene language access in human trafficking cases.
