This Family Law Community of Practice presentation was given on June 11, 2024. The training offers tools and guidance for family law attorneys representing immigrant survivors in cases involving domestic violence and related issues, addressing immigration law concerns, relief options (T visas, VAWA, asylum, SIJ, U visas), and relevant ICE and DHS policies. The training helps practitioners anticipate immigration law issues that will arise in family court cases, especially involving domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, or child maltreatment, as well as knowing where to get legally-accurate immigration information. The presentation also covers being able to present evidence and information to the judge in your case so the judge applies legally correct immigration law and developing case strategies in deciding whether to raise your client’s immigration status in your case in chief, to file motions in limine, or prepare for opposing counsel to raise it.
