Advancing Justice through Meaningful Use of Effective Interpreters

Last updated:

This Roundtable highlighted the advantages for law enforcement and prosecution agencies in obtaining successful results in their criminal investigations and prosecutions by using certified or qualified interpreters—not just bilingual staff—for critical interactions with individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). This approach is more successful in holding offenders accountable and in promoting access to justice for victims and is consistent with relevant laws and policies. It also highlights best practices, the need to translate vital documents, and available interpreter resources.
